The Institute

Founded in February 2015, the Luisa Mell Institute (ILM in Portuguese) acts, mainly, in rescuing wounded and at-risk animals, predominantly in homeless or dangerous situations.
We maintain a shelter with approximately 300 dogs and cats, most of whom are rescued from the streets. The shelter provides a warm bed, food, and medical care with the objective of ensuring adoptions of the rescued animals to responsible owners.

Our work, however, is not restricted solely to rescues and adoptions. We have several other areas of dedication:

  • Defending animal rights
  • Environmental protection
  • To foster dogs, cats or any other animal in jeopardy in urban cities by nursing them back to health and facilitating their adoption to a responsible owner or reintegration into the animal's natural habitat.
  • To teach children and adults about the importance of caring for the environment, as well as respect for animals and nature
  • To supervise public institutions' enforcement of animal protection laws
  • To report and denounce animal mistreatment or any other animal abuse in accordance with the Brazilian law 9.605/1998, article 32

How to Help

Without your help, our work is not possible.

All work done at and on behalf of the Luisa Mell Institute is voluntary. In accordance with our statute, no associated member can receive a salary or any other kind of financial incentive in exchange for their work, with the explicit exception of our veterinarian staff and animal medicine specialists.

One-hundred percent of our income are donations directed to animals in our care and are audited by an independent accountant. In addition, all of our costs and bank accounts are public and can be inspected at any moment.

The most important part of our work are the adoptions themselves. The adoptions of our rescued animals enable new rescue in-take at our facility, as we have a capacity limitation in our shelter that cannot be surpassed. We host and organize dozens of adoption events annually. We announce our adoption events and inform our supporters of our happenings via social networks such as our Facebook page and Instagram (@InstitutoLuisaMell). When adopting, you give the opportunity to an animal with a history of suffering to know love and happiness, as well as allowing our organization to continue to rescue other animals.
Our organization has a portfolio of products that we sell, such as t-shirts and accessories. All sales of these products are dedicated solely to our organization's work. Upon the purchase of an #adotei (I adopted in Portuguese) product, you are not only financially helping our cause, but also promoting our organization by using the product you purchase. To view our portfolio of products, please visit our online store.
